Please do not throw them away and contaminate out water supply with toxic chemicals.  If you live in the ATL area- here is an event near downtown:

Hi all – this coming Saturday Aug 15 take your old electronic equipment junk to Grady High School (Charles Allen Dr @ 8th St parking lot) for recycling. They’ll take almost anything computer-esque including printers and stereo equipment.

Barely.

I thought that I was ready for any green legislation that could come along. I was wrong! Since we committed to 100% green projects (meaning that we use green certifications to validate them) we have been growing exponentially each year since we founded the company in 2005.

Forth Quarter I sensed that something was awry since it felt like “the calm before the storm.”  Since the beginning of the year we have had more inquiries to date that all of 2008!  Is this because we are cooler than others or we have better marketing?  Sure- I would like to take credit for it, but I really think that it is because we have green experience and a sustainable message that resonates in this new economy.   Since we are leading renovation company for green design build services, our phone have been ringing off the hook (do phone still have hooks?) since every one’s new year’s resolution was to either “go green” or they wanted to get their “piece of the stimulus pie” (back).

I am doing my best to get the message out to my fellow citizens about how green can work for them so I added a new section to my blog called “Hoots Group Events.”  This is in the right side bar on top of the other sections. Honestly, you would think that this is for you all to see where you can come visit us next, however it is a great tool for me and my staff to be able to see what’s next on the calender as well.  There are hyperlinks that take you to the websites that are either hosting the events for us or that we will be speaking at.  If you are in the ATL are and want to see how you can either go green, or save money come visit us at one of our upcoming appearances.

Hope to see you soon.  Keep your chin up, we are waking up as a nation to the inevitable plight of energy independence.  All of the calls that we get are not about party politics, but about saving money and reducing dependence on foreign energy.

I was at a sustainable conference here in Atlanta (Greenprints) last week and one of the speakers told the audience that we should ‘use oil up as quickly as possible [in our SUV's] so their is nothing left to fight about.’ All of the “greenies”- held their breath in disbelief for about 5 seconds until he finally said- ‘Just Kidding.’

Joseph Lstiburek- was the master speaker that was entertaining us while educating the crowd. I have quite a few other “gems” that came from him that I will be sharing in future posts.

shamrockorigamiGiving presentations on what is takes to go green and save is fun, however presenting at an Irish Pub will be even more fun!  Irish beer is green on St Patrick’s Day.  Next week I will be talking to a group of architects with a historical focus on design about the green technologies that save money and get rebates and tax credits.

FYI- The ICA stands for the Institute of Classical Architecture .

Here is a description of the event off of their site:

The Young ICA is “Going Green!”

Why it Pays to Go Green..

Where – Fado Irish Pub in Buckhead

When – Tuesday, March 24th, 6:30pm – 8:30pm

What – We will be hosting a belated St. Patrick’s Day happy hour presentation by Matt Hoots of The Hoots Group on ways to save money by “Going Green.” Matt will speak about how green building practices save on the operational costs of projects and about applicable rebates. There are also many tax incentives that are now available for using sustainable building methods. Matt will be available to answer questions after the presentation.

We hope you can join us!

Last weeks headline for the architect of the 2030 plan:

Senate Committee Calls on Edward Mazria to Testify on Building Energy Efficiency

Next weeks headline for the architect of the 2030 plan:

Edward Mazria, Architect of the 203o plan is keynote speaker at Greenprints!

While you cannot get a good seat in congress with out millions of dollars to get you there- you can get a good deal on a seat at Greenprints to hear the same speech!

Why am I promoting Greenprints so heavily?

Now is the time for sustainable change.  These live green forums are key to sustainable thought and spreading the message that we have to change our wasteful ways and think about future generations.  It’s bad enough that we are leaving our kids with a huge deficit, so at least we can give them cleaner air to breath and energy independence while they have to work harder to pay off our generation’s debt.

He will be speaking on Wed the 25 from 12:30 to 1:15.

More on what Ed is currently working on…. more…

I Just got an e-mail for an event here in Atlanta that will be dealing with energy for our vehicles in the future.  If you will be in town during this time- looks like a good topic for discussion.
“Imagine living free from oil.  Picture zero-emission electric cars running on a clean energy grid.  Governments, auto makers, and energy companies are now working with Better Place (www.betterplace.com) to make this vision for the future a reality today.  In 2005, the President and Founder of the World Economic Forum posed the following question to a gathering of young, global leaders, “How do you make the world a better place by 2020?” This inspired a young Israeli to imagine a world without oil.  He drew from his entrepreneurial experience and insights from world leaders to formulate a business plan that applies mobile phone industry economics and renewable energy to transportation.
Founded in October 2007 on $200 million of venture capital, Better Place announced, in its first six months, cooperative agreements with Israel and Denmark to transform their transportation infrastructure from oil-based to renewable energy and significantly reduce harmful emissions.  Subsequently, the company’s plan has been embraced by California, Hawaii, Canada, and Australia.
Presenting this innovative program is Michael Granoff, Head of Oil Independence Policies for Better Place.  Granoff is the founder of Maniv Energy Capital which became the first investor in Better Place, and was instrumental in the founding of Israel Cleantech Ventures, the first venture fund in Israel with an exclusive focus on the cleantech space.

I have been really busy over the last few weeks talking to groups about how the green portion of the stimulus package will affect them.  It seems like there are more and more rebates out there to add to my list every week.  For those who know about green and green building already the “advanced performance systems” is the next step to deepen your green knowledge.  It will cover the more complicated mechanical systems on houses and what rebates are available for going with these options.  I also am giving a basic green class for those who have not had the exposure to green building yet.  To see both of these topics covered in the same day I will be presenting at the Southern Building Show in June.

16th Annual Southern Building Show & Conference June 4-6, 2009.

The session entitled “Advanced Performance Systems”* is scheduled for:
Thursday, 6/4/2009
10:30 am – 12:00 pm
Location: Cobb Galleria Centre (Room TBD)

The session entitled “Green Building Basics”* is scheduled for:
Thursday, 6/4/2009
1:00 pm – 2:30 pm
Location: Cobb Galleria Centre (Room TBD)

I am also going around the Atlanta area giving another presentation called “Why It pays to go green.”  If you would for me to present to your group here in Atlanta feel free to contact me to see how I can help you out as well.  Contact me  at blog@thehootsgroup.com  I also work with many other green professionals that can cover other topics for you as8 well.

Our friends at Georgia Tech have been promoting sustainable design and construction for many years now.  They have bragging rights to the largest Solar Power Array in the SouthEast (installed on the 1996 Olympic swimming pool)  and they did very well in the Solar Decathlon just recently.  Through their architecture and building construction departments they continue to host sustainable learning events.  Here are a few that are open to the public.  One is this week, and there are a couple others planned for the next few months.  Here the invitation that they asked for me to pass along: more…

Each year the Hoots Group sponsors a local home school team that participates in a sustainable competition.  They did really well last year winning the region and placing high at state as well.  I just found out that they made it the state competition again!  From the sponsoring parents:

“They took the top champions award at their qualifier tournament, the second place champions award at their super regional tournament (a new level this year) and they have advanced to the state tournament at Georgia Tech on January 31. “

I will be there to support them on the 31st.  I was really proud last year at their attention to detail and with the amount of research they did to prepare for the competition.  This year they have been asking us some very good questions about renewable energy that took some research on my part as well to answer. more…
