Each year the Hoots Group sponsors a local home school team that participates in a sustainable competition.  They did really well last year winning the region and placing high at state as well.  I just found out that they made it the state competition again!  From the sponsoring parents:

“They took the top champions award at their qualifier tournament, the second place champions award at their super regional tournament (a new level this year) and they have advanced to the state tournament at Georgia Tech on January 31. “

I will be there to support them on the 31st.  I was really proud last year at their attention to detail and with the amount of research they did to prepare for the competition.  This year they have been asking us some very good questions about renewable energy that took some research on my part as well to answer. I have a green…

Happy Dr. MLK Jr. day! Living in Atlanta, there are many movements that have started or were accelerated here. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was an inspiration to many in the civil right movement in the 60′s. He had a dream and it came true. A very inspiring story that helped change our culture for the good.

If you voted for him or not, Obama will become our first green president. He to “Has a green dream..” A green dream to make the US more energy independent.

While in the Marine Corps we had light green Marines and dark green Marines. While this was a great way to remind all Marines that skin color was just the surface of a human, no matter what color you skin is- you can be dark green as well. A darker degree of sustainable- that is.

Sustainability has lost its political divisiveness, green resonates across cultural barriers. All of us want to live in a healthier environment, be more comfortable, and save money. As a green contractor we get calls from all walks of like rich and poor, multicultural, etc. Everyone is starting to get it now. I can have a productive conversation with anyone now, because there is always a part of green that everyone has a little passion about.

I challenge each of you to honor Dr. MLK Jr. by coming up with your own green dream. He had a dream to for all of us to have the same opportunities in a free society; you too should follow the new green movement to become energy independent. This is not just independent of foreign oil; this is also independent of the local utility. Saving money on your utilities is money in your pocket- not theirs.

Go green. Become energy independent. Come up with your green plan to become energy independent today!

Thank you Dr. King Jr. for giving us a peaceful way to make a difference.

Tomorrow is another day… 2009 is a New Year

What happened on January 1st?  Is that hope that I smell in the air?  Might just be smog, however with less people on the road pollution should go down.  Did we finally put 2008 behind us and throw way the key?  Even Neil Boortz and his crew seemed to be positive about 2009 for reasons that they could not even explain a couple of days ago.

It is a new year. Woohoo.

I have been posting sustainable tips for the New Year since the 1st and this just came to me in an e-mail.  I know that we all want loose weight etc, but here are some great tips on crafting your New Year’s resolutions and making them stick!  What is even better is that this came to me from a Real Estate agent.  I have to tell you, all of the green real estate agents that I work with are so inspiring.  The market is not what it used to be, however they are all working for a greater purpose.  One agent told me the other day that they spent hours on my blog and links the other day.  That is why I do this.  To shed light on green topics and to motivate others to go green.

“Green means Go!” Go Green!

They say that everything that you need to know for life you learned in kindergarten.  I have also heard that the best business skills can be attributed to ones that were gained through military service.  However, I am looking to my two young sons to live my like the way that is socially, economically, and environmentally responsible.

I was driving to Home Depot to recycle our Christmas tree and we came up to a traffic light that was red.  My 3 year old son was very observant and told me the the light was green by stating “Green means Go!”  He must have picked it up from school or his mother (who was a teacher as well.)

What a powerful statement to make.  Green means go.  Lets follow his lead.  We have the green light to “go green” right now and are we moving forward?  Now is the perfect time to go green and we should act on it as a society immediately.  With the media attention and the economy the way it is, sustainable practices are better understood and when times are tough are also mandatory.  Think about the gas situation that we had last year.  Gas prices soared and consumption went down in the double digits.  Now gas prices have come back down.  People are working from home, carpooling and using other alternative means of transportation.  Go Green!

In the SouthEast we are experiencing a level IV drought in some areas.  We can’t water our grass with municipal water.  I think that is is environmentally irresponsible in the first place to water your grass and plants with treated water but now your can’t do it anyway. What happened?  Well- now we are looking to rain barrels and cisterns to collect water and looking to better landscaping techniques that do not require as much water if any at all.  Go Green!

We also have more incentives and rebates than ever before.  Yes, you save money by going green, and you actually are getting paid to do so as well.  There are tax incentives on the state and federal levels that help cover the cost of efficient improvements, there are also many other rebates from local programs as well.  To see what is available in GA click here. Go Green!

2009 is the year that we have to go green because it is the right thing to do.  Yes, green is in style right now, but as the style fades away the sustainable practices are here to stay.

Resolution #4  Go Green!  Spread the word that this is the year to Go Green!

If the “Rich” are hurting….?

First of all, I do not believe in the class warfare tactics that are constantly used by others, so I am definitely not going to go there.  For most of the last 3 years I have ignored all of the news the best that I could.  That is one reason that or company has had such a good growth rate and people want to be around us.  We have been too busy to see what is going on in the world and we have been able to focus on our business plan and help our clients with their needs.

Recently, it is hard to ignore the news since it comes at you in ways you did not ask.  On TV, bad news is embedded into the commercials now, the recessions is built into radio ads, and the bail out is the talk of the town.  With all of the bad new I am hearing my clients have some concern about the economy.  Our clients are very high net worth individuals and they just don’t like all of the bad news all of the time also.  Do we all have less money now?  The neutral news that I am hearing is that 50% will not even have to make lifestyle changes during these times.  What???  So that means that 50% are not even hurting the way the bad news is telling us we are?  So then, 50% should do the responsible thing and be positive and help the other 50% see the light.

So there is a light.

Yes, there is a light, but do not expect it to come from traditional sources.  Do not expect the government to give you an emotional bailout.  I think that the light needs to be a movement from the bottom up.  There are many different ways to get the light to be seen and there are a number of movements that will contribute to the light.

What is the light?

Hope.

Charitable giving is down to nothing now.  Even those who can afford to give are afraid.  Personally, I am not motivated by fear so this media scare tactic is not the answer.  Look at the key words that have won political races for the past half century.  How many races were won on fear and the other won on hope?  This last election cycle there was enough fear out there already so hope won.  All parties and the media need to stop spreading fear and start looking at the hopeful sign in our times.

Where is the good news?

  • 50% of us will not be affected by these economic times in a bad way.
  • Some states are looking to import workers into their economies.
  • When times are tough, businesses look at ways of becoming more efficient (this is green!)
  • We still have food to eat and most of us still have shelter.
  • There are programs out there to help you make your home more efficient
  • There is talk about ways to keep the US strong through energy independence

New Years Resolution #1- this is for me and all of you!!!!!

Focus on the positive and avoid the negative.  Help those who do not have hope and offer words of hope to get them through the day, week, and year. Pick a cause that needs help and give some of your time to it so they can be hope messengers as well.  There are those out there that are much worse off than us, help uplift their spirit.

Try this out for a few days and let me know how it works.  Let your friends, family and colleagues know what your mission is and encourage them to join in as well.  Hope is contagious and 1 positive comment can refuel someones spirit for one day.

Yes, times are tougher than a few years ago, but we will make it through it as long as we focus on the positive.

PS- If everyone felt good about these times, than the stock market would pick up as well and consumer spending would resume.  It is unfortunate that these are the main indicators of our emotional well being, but we can control them.

Hope.

I will focus on some movements that wil not only help you feel better, but will positively effect others as well over the next few weeks in my blog posts.
